Equine Coronavirus

On February 14, 2020 a veterinarian reported to the State Veterinarian’s Office that a domestic horse located in Maricopa County, AZ was diagnosed with equine coronavirus on February 13, 2020. Equine coronavirus is NOT the same as the strain of coronavirus referred to as COVID-19, and cannot be transmitted to humans. Equine coronavirus affects horses infrequently, and many horses exposed do not show clinical signs even after being infected. Equine coronavirus is not a reportable illness in Arizona.

Equine coronavirus is transmitted between horses by contact with infected feces. Typically, equine coronavirus results in relatively mild symptoms including a fever, lack of appetite, depression, colic, laying down frequently, and diarrhea. Generally equine coronavirus is treated by addressing the clinical symptoms and providing supportive care.

The best method to prevent equine coronavirus is to keep equine facilities as clean as possible. Manure should be disposed of where it cannot contaminate pasture, paddocks, or drinking water. Having good biosecurity practices will significantly reduce the likelihood of your horses contracting the illness.
